Car park price hike fair says varsity By Georgia O’Connor-Harding INCREASING THE cost of on-site car parking is the “fairest approach” to Canterbury University addressing the cost of car parking provision and maintenance. On-site campus parking prices has been earmarked to skyrocket over the next three years. Last week Canterbury University announced on-site campus parking will increase by more than 56.6 per cent per cent for students and nearly 120 per cent for staff by 2019. The decision comes after Canterbury University was unable to cover the cost of car park provision and maintenance. Vice-chancellor Dr Rob Carr said it does not believe it is appropriate to subsidise car parking from other revenue that would be used for

In Brief BARBECUE PROPOSED The city council has begun consultation on the installation of a barbecue and shelter with seating at Avonhead Park. Wigram Lions approached the city council about the project so they could leave a permanent legacy for their 100th worldwide Lions anniversary in 2017. SPEED LIMIT CHANGES POSSIBLE IN HALSWELL The city council has proposed lowering the speed limit along six roads within the Halswell area. This would include changing the speed limit on Halswell Junction Rd, Marshs Rd, Quaifes Rd, Sparks Rd, Milns Rd and Sutherlands Rd. It comes after the city council approved speed limit changes on 29 roads around the city in September. At the meeting, the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board requested the city council looked into further speed reviews in the Halswell area. Lymphoma Moya is a beautiful 4yr old Bull Mastiff cross who until earlier this year had been a perfectly healthy young dog. Her owners had noticed that over the past few days she hadn’t been quite her normal bouncy self, had gone off her food and developed a swelling under her throat. They bought her to the clinic and although on examination she seemed quite well she not only had enlarged lymph nodes around her neck but also around the front of her shoulders and at the back of her hind legs. Causes of this could be infection, an allergic reaction, immune mediated disease (where the body kills off its own cells) or cancer. Fine needles aspirates (FNA’s) were taken of Moya’s lymph nodes and sent to a veterinary laboratory. Taking an FNA is a painless procedure and in the majority of animals can be done without sedation. A small needle is inserted into the tissue that you want to sample and a small amount of cells are collected and put onto a slide.

Unfortunately, the results that came back from the laboratory confirmed that Moya had a malignant form of cancer known as Lymphoma. This form of cancer is one of the most commonly seen in dogs and often involves multiple organs around the body. To find out where the cancer had spread to Moya had blood tests and thoracic and abdominal x-rays and ultrasound scans performed. The Lymphoma had spread to organs within her chest and abdomen as well as within her lymph nodes – she had high stage B cell-Lymphoma. The results were discussed with her owners who decided that they would like to go ahead with treating her further. With this type of Lymphoma treatment is not surgical, but medical; usually with chemotherapy. We are in contact with a number of specialist Veterinary Oncology clinics in Australia and we contacted them straight away. Within 24 hours they had produced an entire report on Moya, her cancer and different chemotherapy options that they recommended. These treatment options varied from palliative care with steroids through to multidrug chemotherapy options. Moya’s family decided to go ahead with the preferred primary treatment option lasting 15 weeks. Moya started her chemotherapy the following day coming into the clinic every Friday for a blood test to check her red and white blood cell levels and for administration of her drugs intravenously. Throughout the entire duration of treatment, she was very well behaved and tolerated the chemotherapy drugs extremely well, with hardly any noticeable side effects. She was always ready for her treats and walk after her drugs had been given! At the end of the 15 weeks Moya was in complete remission and four weeks later still appears to be. Her owners report that

she is better than ever and when she visited last week she was rolling around as normal for her tummy to be tickling whilst we were trying to take her blood test! There is a chance that the Lymphoma will come back but for the moment she is happy, has a new lease of life and is enjoying her time at home with her family. Informing a client that their special friend has a form of cancer, is one of the awful parts of my job. It is such a dreaded disease with often fatal consequences and often at the time of diagnosis, the disease has well advanced. Due to many cancers having malignant potential, speed of diagnosis and treatment is necessary to have any chance of remission. Many hard decisions have to be made and that is when you can rely on us to do our job. We have the necessary skills and diagnostics to diagnose the type of cancer your pet has and then we employ the specialized services of Oncology consultants in Australia to get the most successful chemotherapy protocol for your pet. Designed by Cymon Allfrey Architects Ltd, a rebuilt retail centre in Hornby will feature a retail area on the first floor and a studio space on the second. The centre based on the intersection of Main South Rd and Garvins Rd will have a downstairs area housing a hairdresser, fish and chip shop and restaurant. Tenants for the retail centre are still being finalised. NAI Harcourts real estate agent Mike Tapley said the studio space on the second floor could be divided into a gym and office. He said the building was close to completion and was hoping to receive a code of compliance certificate from the city council over the next two weeks. consent on March 10 last year. The former single building which housed a dairy, Thai restaurant and fish and chip shop was demolished so the new two-storey building could be rebuilt. Mr Tapely said the former building was “tacky as anything” and a “terrible old place” before it was demolished. The new centre leased by Harcourts will include associated car parking, 48m2 of signage and landscaping. Along the eastern side of the site will be car-parking and access both to Main South Rd and Garvins Rd with 17 on-site car-parking spaces.

Mr Tapley said all traffic issues will be mitigated with a 10min car park outside the shop, car parks around the back of the building and down the road. Tap dancers’ amazing feat By Georgia O’Connor-Harding YEARS OF training to transform his feet into musical instruments has paid off for 18-year-old Josh Wadley. The former Burnside High School student claimed the top prize in tap dancing at the National Young Performer Awards. Josh won the overall prize of $5000, beating 49 of New Zealand’s top tap dancers aged 15 to 21. “I think it went extremely well. I was very happy with how I danced and felt that I left everything I could on the stage. It was great to have my hard work pay off,” he said. Josh trained under Daniel Sintes and is now based in Sydney, where he’s studying a full-time dance course at performing arts centre, Village on Broadway. His next goal is to travel to the United States to take part in tap festivals, including the Los Angeles Tap Festival and TapCity in New York. “I am one day hoping to become a professional dancer touring the world performing in shows,” he said. Josh said he also enjoys

teaching and would love to have his own dance school or show one day. His mother, Michelle Wadley, said her son had grown up with tap dancing but went over to Sydney to strengthen his other

forms of dance. “He was extremely shy so I didn’t think he would ever dance on stage, but (he) proved me wrong,” she said. As part of the competition, each dancer was required to

take part in a masterclass by the adjudicators, perform a threespeed dance solo and a solo of their own choice. Meanwhile, current Burnside High students Will Perkins and Bayley Graham, both 16, were awarded second and third place respectively. Both dancers said they felt the competition went well with Will winning $3000 in second place and Bayley winning $1500 in third. Will trained under JK Dance Works and Bayley with Jan Ruardy. In the future, Will is looking to compete in national dance championships, including Hollywood Bound in Australia, while Bayley is looking at competitions in Sydney and Melbourne. “I really like being in front of audiences so anything that makes me happy I love doing. So I’d like to keep it up,” Bayley said. Christchurch Tap Dancing Teachers’ Association president Tracey Wilson said the boys danced their hearts out. She said the city had six tap dancers at the competition and achieved an amazing feat by taking out the top three places.

Canterbury University staff will be expected to pay $600 next year, $800 in 2018 and $1000 in 2019. Ilam and Upper Riccarton Residents’ Association chairman Peter Harding (right) said he felt sorry for the university having to resort to such extremes to attract revenue. “If I was brutally honest it shows a measure of desperation on the university’s part. “We both know they would probably prefer not to do that. But I don’t think they believe they have any other choice,” he said. Waimairi Rd resident and member of the residents’ association Richard English said the increase would have ramifications on all affected parties. “It is certainly going to drive more people onto the street of course. From a resident’s point of view it is not helpful and some of the fees do seem to be quite steep,” he said. The resident association will hold a meeting to see what can be done about the issue.

SUPPOSEDLY WE’RE zeroing in on summer now although some days it certainly doesn’t feel like it. A reminder that in the city boundaries there is a permanent ban on outside fires and we’re sort of obliged to put any fire out that we’re called to. I say sort of obliged because our officers are generally pretty decent people and quite often leave a small fire like a brazier to the occupants to put out themselves rather than involve a high-revving fire pump and have firefighters stomp all over a section. They do this at the risk of being lied to and ignored. The second time called back to the same fire their attitude is generally much less obliging. Ducklings, a dog stuck in a fence and an injured swan featured in animal rescues carried out by city crews this week.

For good measure they were again called to pluck a trapped drone from the top of a tree. These are sure to increase as aerial tools and toys become more and more prevalent. Just a word of advice to would-be pilots. There are an awful lot of trees that are much taller than our tallest ladder. Hornby Hub had an evacuation last Thursday evening, caused, it seems, by a spray tanning operation in a beauty shop setting off the fire detection system.

Readers respond to the Western News article on a proposed Lamb & Hayward funeral home to be established on Halswell Junction Rd Margaret and Tony Reiha – This is a residential area with beautiful homes – people have spent a lot of money to build a lovely home in a new area and this will bring the prices down considerably. The traffic will be horrific causing accidents at the roundabouts. We had considered shifting from our home in Westlake to the Longhurst area or surrounding areas to be a little closer to our family who also live in Longhurst and Halswell but most certainly wouldn’t entertain that area at all should this go ahead. This is residential not a business area. There are plenty of business areas for this funeral home to build on else where – who wants to be reminded daily of death and the increase in traffic every day. Think about all the little children as well and I understand a school is to be built across from this – no thanks. cilities in the Halswell area apart from local churches leading to considerable travel to attend most funerals. For people to claim “cultural values” and “religious beliefs” as a reason to oppose is frankly clutching at straws if this is the best reason they can come up with. Death occurs in all cultures and some sort of service or celebration of life usually takes place. This is another example of nimbyism at its worst. Gary Knight – In consideration of the majority of funeral homes situated in sites not encroaching on residential properties the proposed Lamb & Hayward addition to Halswell Junction Rd is a retrograde step. This insensitive siting will not only have a negative impact on resale value for adjacent homeowners, create congested traffic issues but is also demeaning for those having cultural values or religious beliefs opposing having a funeral home so close to a living area. In spite of parochial views by Lamb & Hayward noting the advantage of a funeral home and chapel within a community environment, the 500-strong petition opposing it would suggest otherwise. Given the myriad of land opportunities within a growing and expanding south-west surely an appropriate sector of land could be purchased by this commercial entity for the proposed 1222 sq m funeral home comprising

two chapels, memorial gardens , lounge, administration block and a 181 car park site. Readers respond to Western News’ article on the Quarryman’s Trail cycleway potentially removing car parks, changing speed limits and road layouts. But they are a bunch of whining kids who want everything for free. The taxpaying road users are about to be screwed again and the ratepayers are screwed twice. Maybe the council can start licensing bikes and use the money for upgrades. Brian Roberts – With reference to the article in Western News I have a few questions: 1. Has anyone done any research into how many cyclists will use this facility. Will it be only on fine days and the car brought out for winter? 2. Does it take the needs of cyclists to have two roundabouts removed and replaced with traffic lights when motorists have put up with the roundabouts for years? The bicycle lobbyists seem to think that the city can be taken back to the 1950s and we will all ride bikes again.

Has no one told them that you can never go back. The car is here to stay and that is a fact of life. They give no thought to the old and infirm and their needs but only see the Holy Grail of a car-less society. It is time that some of them grew up. One hopes that common sense will prevail. Michael Brathwaite – Regarding the Quarryman’s Trail, while I do not object to cycle lanes in principle, I do object to the removal of any parking spaces, the closure of street entrances to motorists, and the lowering of speed limits. I am on a list of people to whom the city council is supposed to send emails regarding issues like this but, while they advise me of proposed changes in places to which I seldom go, such as Linwood, I never seem to hear about ones in my area, and

I’m certain I heard nothing about this one. On Labour Day, when driving along Brougham St, I noticed Collins St had been closed. There had been a lot of discussion about it in the local papers recently and the community board recently asked the city council to lower the speed limit there. However, I suspect it has all been an orchestrated smokescreen, because when I rang the city council about it, I learned that they had decided in February to stop motorists turning into it to avoid the traffic jams where three lanes merge into two, and that it is to become part of a cycleway. I fully sympathise with shop owners who will lose business when customers can no longer park near their shops. They will probably be forced to cycle as they will not be able to afford to run cars anymore.

Brightest young sporting talent OUTSTANDING TEAM: The Burnside High School volleyball team were rewarded for their national dominance over the last two years, taking home the most outstanding team of young sportswomen award. They shared the award with Villa Maria. Burnside won their second straight national title in Palmerston North in April. They defeated Tauranga Girls’ College in a tight four-set tournament final 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-22, 26-24).

SPORTS THE 26TH Zonta secondary schools sports awards dinner was held on Thursday night. The annual event, initiated by the Zonta Club of Christchurch South in 1990 to celebrate the sporting achievements of talented young Cantabrians, is a highlight of the year for award winners. For many, recognition at the awards heralds the beginning of long-standing and highly successful international careers. The judging of the awards was undertaken this year by Anita Sutherland, Mike De Bono, Jon Peters,

Aaron Webb and Dave Harrison. They had the challenging task of selecting finalists and winners from a total of 150 nominations (counting teams as one) received from 21 schools in the Canterbury area, including Kaikoura, North Canterbury and the West Coast. Zonta International is a service organisation, made up of business and professional women, committed to raising the status of women worldwide. The highlight for Marshall came earlier in the year when she was named in the New Zealand secondary school netball team. The defender captained her school at the national secondary school tournament in Hutt Valley this month, where the team finished seventh. Marshall also represented St Margaret’s at this year’s Maadi Cup national secondary school rowing championship. She was part of the eight which finished second in the Levin Jubilee Cup final. The year 13 student also competed in a four which finished in the top 10 at the regatta.

MOST VALUABLE SPORTSMAN: Burnside High School first XV captain Cam Russell (right) took out the most valuable contribution to a team by a young sportsman award. Russell was the co-winner of this year’s UC Championship player of the year award. The flanker played well in excess of 50 games for Burnside in his four seasons with the first XV. After first making the squad as a year 10 student in 2013, Russell went on to captain the team in 2015. The year 13 student has also been a part of the Crusaders Knights under-18 development programme and this year helped Burnside win the South Island co-ed school championship.

OUTSTANDING YOUNG SPORTSWOMEN: Villa Maria College’s first XI hockey team also won the most outstanding team of young sportswomen award after securing their first ever national title this year. In September, the team won the Christchurch schools’ premier league before capturing their maiden Federation Cup title in Auckland. The team had only one loss over the entire season against St Margaret’s College in the premier league. It was also the perfect farewell for six students who played their final season for the school.

The St Andrew’s College clay target shooting team of Jacob Warnock, Lyndon Arundell, Jimmy Field, Mason Gardener and Laurence Arundell won the most outstanding team of young sportsmen award. They made history recently when they won the team points title at the New Zealand secondary school trap shooting championships. They scored 295/300 points, which has never been achieved before.

Middleton Grange student William Stedman took home two Zonta sports awards. Stedman won the award for most outstanding achievement by a young sportsman with a disability. He then received the biggest award – most outstanding achievement by a young sportsman specialising in one sport. The 16-year-old became a double Olympic medallist this year when he won bronze in both the men’s 400m T36 and men’s 800m T36 final at the Rio Paralympics. Stedman, who has cerebral palsy, also competed in the long jump at Rio. The gold award is the highest level of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award. To receive the award, students were required to complete five sections, which included undertaking a service in their community for a minimum of 12 months, working on a skill of their choice, travelling away for four days and three nights, taking part in a physical recreation activity for a minimum of 12 months and engaging in a purposeful activity away from home for five days such as environmental work. Deputy principal Shane Morrow said it is a huge commitment of time and effort to get through to the gold award. “We’re very proud of their outstanding achievement,” he said. Last year’s Riccarton High School student Sophie Madsen also had her gold award presented to her while current year 13 student Bonnie Maxwell will be attending a ceremony at Government House, Wellington, to receive her gold award.

THE ABBA Show jets in for a full national tour this month, playing at the Isaac Theatre Royal on Wednesday 9th November. Following more than 4000 international performances to date, including recent tours of North America and South Africa, the show’s NZ tour will take in an exhausting 22 different venues in just 34 days. Far from being ‘just another cover band’, The ABBA Show is a full-scale concert experience and stage show featuring 2.5 hours of live musical performance with a live band, replica costumes, theatrical lighting and effects, and all the ABBA hits. And despite Mamma Mia (the musical) still doing the rounds, promoter John Van Grinsven from Showtime Australia is confident that fans will recognize the distinct and worthwhile experience that The ABBA Show offers. “They’re completely different shows. Mamma Mia is a great musical but The ABBA Show does more of an authentic concert experience. We’ve worked really hard to make it just the way the fans will remember it if they were lucky enough to see the originals perform live. It really is a unique show.”
